Friday, September 13, 2019 ((rezonodwes.com)) – Haiti voted Wednesday in favor of the request for “ Convening the Consultative Body of the Inter-American Treaty of Reciprocal Assistance ” presented by a group of member countries of the Organization of American States (OAS)
The States Parties to the Inter-American Treaty on Mutual Assistance (TIAR) of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) have approved Wednesday a resolution to establish a body for consultation of the treaty and to meet during the second half of September.
An OAS statement indicated that in a vote on Wednesday when TIAR affiliates participated through their Foreign Minister, the resolution was adopted by 12 votes (Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, United States, Guatemala, Haiti Honduras, Paraguay, Dominican Republic) 5 Abstentions (Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Panama, Peru) and 1 absent (Bahamas).
The TIAR is the basis of the doctrine of hemispheric defense. It was signed in Rio de Janeiro in 1947 and entered into force the following year.
