This Saturday, September 12, CERBIC-HAÏTI launched at the Institute of the United Brothers of Léogâne (IFUL) the fifth edition of its Professional Orientation Program for Schoolchildren (POPE).
Initiated in 2015, The POPE's mission is to provide young schoolchildren in the Palmes region with relevant information on the functioning of the academic and professional world in Haiti. This dynamic of proximity and salutary advice developed with the conquerors of competitive places within the various faculties in the country, in particular at the UEH, strengthens the confidence of young people to forge their own success in this difficult system of integration. CERBIC's staff, made up of a diverse group of academics, provide applicants with solid preparation techniques for entrance exams according to the subjects required for the different faculties.
Introductory presentations by these seniors who have already completed obtained their university entrance tickets, allow young graduates to choose their profession without too many pitfalls. During this awareness campaign, anecdotes, enjoyable experiences as well as the vicissitudes are told to them so that they are aware of the challenges to be faced throughout their university and professional career.
Rightly, Rijkaard FORTUNÉ holds laudatory remarks towards the POPE which sets itself up as a structure dedicated to meeting the demand for information and training requested by young people who dream of setting foot on university. According to the director of the educational department of CERBIC-HAITI, several students from the Communes of Gressier, Léogâne and Carrefour have already passed through the doors of most of the country's higher education institutes, in particular the State University of Haiti ( UEH), thanks to this promising project which facilitates many needy families.
Despite the complication of the current school year, CERBIC-HAITI continues to keep the torch lit by guiding the steps of young schoolchildren in the Palmes region , providing them with full support to make informed study choices that suit their aptitude and their academic profile.
The POPE, for the benefit of students and schools
Unlike previous editions , the heads of CERBIC-HAITI travel to bring the POPE within the target schools of the Communes of Gressier and Léogâne. Several days of conferences on career guidance will be led by academics and professionals from various backgrounds to inspire and stimulate young people on the path to success.
This series of presentations is aimed in particular at students from New Secondary I until New Secondary IV. It is true that the number of hours left to complete the school year is very minimal, the CERBIC-HAITI would like to count on a good collaboration of the school directors by devoting at least four hours of time to cover it. the agenda conceived within the framework of the POPE.
If for Rijkaard FORTUNÉ there is no education without professional guidance, the POPE nevertheless encountered enormous difficulties from the first edition. These obstacles are above all linked to the reluctance of school officials who do not yet unequivocally assimilate the merits of this initiative.
Although the POPE is useful for young schoolchildren, Rijkaard FORTUNÉ has observed that some school principals feared to entrust their students to CERBIC-HAITI for a career orientation session. This “caution” is probably due to an unjustified fear of not recovering the students for the benefit of a possible project of creation by the CERBIC of its own school.
The director of the POPE, a former student of the Faculty of Applied Linguistics ( FLA) at the UEH, reassures the schools that the POPE has the sole objective of supervising the pupil to help him succeed in his university entrance examination, especially at the UEH.
Thus , the CERBIC staff would like to invite the directors to be more cooperative throughout this process which would even enhance the brilliance of their schools if it turns out that more students from their establishments obtain their entrance tickets to university.
Perspectives grafted onto the POPE
If the Professional Orientation Program of CERBIC-HAITI is already crowned with satisfactory results, the educational director thinks that said program should target schoolchildren from the second fundamental cycle. In this sense, CERBIC-HAITI plans to organize orientation sessions for children from the 5th basic year in the next editions of the POPE. This will allow the student to discover his aptitude much earlier in order to better identify the profession that suits him.
Aware of the shortcomings faced by Haitian schoolchildren, following orientation sessions, CERBIC-HAITI always takes the option of also organizing preparations for entering the faculty (CERBIC-prefac) for young people in the final year.
Despite the academic turbulence, amplified by the Covid crisis, the organization will put the expertise of its staff at the service of graduates of the Palmes region with a view to instilling in them the concepts and techniques of access to universities and vocational schools in the country.
Through the mobilizations implied by the multiples activities to start the POPE machine, CERBIC faces major financial constraints. However, apart from the meager contribution claimed from schoolchildren, which is totally insufficient, the sources of funding dried up even more during this year riddled with socioeconomic troubles. Despite the financial difficulties, CERBIC-HAITI plans to broaden the framework in order to reach as many schools as possible in the Palmes region.
“So much education is worth, so much society is worth”, the staff of this non-profit organization counts on the support of institutions working in the field of education and the development of young people to accompany it in this process.
