“My teammates reacted with enthusiasm when they heard that I could continue to play with them,” said the 19-year-old footballer.
Thursday August 6, 2020 ((rezonodwes.com)) – Ellen Fokkema will be the first female footballer to join a men's team. Fokkema, 19, will join VV Foarút in Holland.
The news was announced by the Royal Netherlands Football Association. It is, according to the association itself, a “ pilot test ” to allow women to participate in amateur football category A-Men.
VV Foraút plays in the fourth division of the KNVB and has a mixed team in which all under 18s play. At the age of 19, the men were placed in category A and the women in category B.
“ It’s great that you can still play here. I had been playing with these kids since I was 5 and wished I could play with them the following year. It's a challenge, but it makes me even more excited. I asked the club if it was possible to do something together and we were able to apply to KNVB “said Fokkema.
