Haiti – RDR : More and more Haitians are ripped off by counterfeiters
Last week the Dominican driver of a minibus, Agustín Torres and his 18 Haitian passengers (11 men, 4 women and 3 children) were arrested during a migratory control by members of the Dominican army in the community of Sabaneta, Province of Santiago Rodríguez.
The 18 Haitians were carrying false papers, they explained to the Dominican authorities, that they had paid in Haiti the equivalent of 25,000 to 30,000 pesos to obtain these documents but that they were convinced that they were legal documents… The Haitians were handed over to Migration authorities for repatriation to Haiti, while the driver of the minibus was made available to the public prosecutor’s office, said Colonel Jose Manuel Duran Infante, commander of the Fourth Brigade with headquarters in Mao.
In Haiti, the disastrous socio-economic situation pushes Haitians to try to leave the country by all means in the hope of a better life, becoming easy prey for mafia networks of counterfeiters in Haiti in Port-au-Prince, Cap-Haïtien, Fort Liberté, Ounaminthe among others…

Migration services and the military report that among the people who are arrested in the border zone, in the Northwest, in Santiago and in other parts of the country, many are carriers of altered or false documents. Recently, the military authorities have detected in separate operations in the border area four people carrying identity cards bearing the name of the same person, but with different photos …
Military sources said that because of the increased surveillance at the border and the proliferation of migratory controls throughout the Dominican territory, many Haitian citizens are being scammed by their compatriots and Dominicans for falsified residence documents to reside on the Dominican territory. Thousands of fake documents have already been seized, among other things, of fake PNRE cards, fake Haitian passports, false visas, fake Dominican identity cards (cédula), fake birth certificates… etc…
