Haiti – Migration: 3 major host countries for Haitians rejected the Global Compact
In addition, on Sunday, Miguel Vargas Maldonado, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic announced that the Dominican Government will abstain in the next vote on the adoption of another Global Compact, this time concerning the refugees. Monday, December 17th at the plenary session of the United Nations General Assembly of the United Nations in New York.
While acknowledging “the humanitarian character of the Refugee Pact” in the light of its commitments under its own legislation and the international conventions that The Dominican Republic has signed and ratified, it stresses that some of the principles are contained in the Covenant to support the international instruments to which the Dominican Republic is not party: the Convention on the Status of Stateless Persons of 1954 (never signed) and The Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness 1961 (signed on December 5, 1961 but never ratified).
