Three (3) vehicles including two (2) belonging to the Unit for the Fight against Corruption (ULCC) were set on fire on the sidelines of the hearing of the former Senator of Artibonite Youri Latortue within this said institution. The ULCC invited Youri Latortue to respond to facts akin to corruption with which he is accused after a loan of 70 million gourdes obtained from the National Office of Old-age Insurance (ONA).
Certain like him alone, Youri LATORTUE landed in PACOT with his lawyers, the people as sealed off, thus pressuring the ULCC official even before laying out the facts relating to the loan in question.
The hearing lasted approximately six (6) hours in the ULCC premises located at rue Sapotille / Pacôt in Port-au-Prince. Hundreds of activists close to the opposition responded to the call by coming to give their support to the opposition leader.
The altercations between opposition demonstrators and the police forces mobilized early in the morning of Thursday August 13, 2020 in the vicinity of the ULCC caused tensions. Tear gas fire, stone throwing and the burning of vehicles all resulted from these exchanges.
In response, the Anti-Corruption Unit condemned the burning of two vehicles belonging to the institution within the framework of demonstrations by opposition activists and close to former senator Youri Latortue during her hearing on Thursday, August 13, 2020. She says she denounces serious threats and insulting remarks made against the employees of the institution.
