Saturday, October 3, 2020 ((rezonodwes.com)) – All opposition forces in Chile demand the resignation of the director of the Carabinieri de Chile, General Mario Rozas, after a young man was pushed from a bridge across the Mapocho River by a man in uniform.
The incident, in which the 16-year-old was seriously injured during a protest in the capital, has rekindled criticism of the violence with which the institution police take action against participants in the protests, which was made more vivid by contradictory police statements and videos posted on social media.
Although senior officials at this institution initially dismissed the charges, they later pointed out that it was a “regrettable accident” in the middle of a police intervention. Today, General Enrique Monras, chief of the West Metropolitan Carabinieri Area, said the young man had “lost his balance” when an officer in uniform attempted to stop him.
He also declared that the rifleman involved will retain his administrative functions within his unit for the duration of the investigation.
